FSU Learning Lounge

The Florida State University College of Medicine “Learning Lounge” at the Daytona State College satellite campus was envisioned as more than a student lounge, it was designed as a destination for focus, collaboration, and restoration. Tasked with transforming a series of blank, underutilized rooms into a fully realized student-centered environment, our team reimagined the space as a modern academic hub that supports the intensity of medical education while offering moments of calm, connection, and pride.

Inspired by FSU’s rich identity and the coastal context of Daytona Beach, the design balances school spirit with a refined, contemporary aesthetic. Custom murals and curated graphics celebrate the legacy of Florida State University, grounding students in a sense of place and belonging. Purposeful color blocking, layered textures, and durable yet elevated materials create visual interest without overwhelming the space… because focus is the real luxury here.

The lounge was thoughtfully zoned to accommodate a range of study styles and social needs. Individual workstations support quiet concentration, collaborative tables encourage peer learning, and soft seating areas provide space to decompress between demanding coursework. Integrated technology (including dedicated content-creation and presentation setups) reflects the evolving ways students learn, communicate, and prepare for their professional futures.

Every design decision was guided by wellness, flexibility, and longevity. Furniture selections prioritize comfort and durability, while lighting and acoustics were carefully considered to reduce fatigue and enhance productivity. The result is a learning environment that feels intentional, welcoming, and quietly inspiring. Proof that even the most rigorous academic programs deserve spaces that feel human.

This project stands as a testament to our belief that great design can elevate education, foster community, and support the next generation of leaders—one thoughtfully designed space at a time.
Yes, it’s functional. Yes, it’s beautiful. And yes, the students actually want to hang out here.
